What is “Symbol Three” ?

After 3 months of searching finally I was able to settle down a name.

A good domain name is way more important than a good company name. However a good domain name is very difficult to obtain now. Domain harvesters register hundreds of domain names every day and people need to pay ransom for a domain they ask for.

The original domain name is “SYMPLiK”, which is a combination of “Simple” and “Like”. The “Y” changed to “I”, a very common practice in naming, and then morphs two words together. However it’s not easy to remember and some people mis-typed it as “symplink”, and sent me email with wrong address.

I started thinking a new name in Feb 2016, after a year-long R12 upgrade project I managed was completed. Picking words and tried a number of combination, then searching WHOIS to check whether these domains were registered. Using the words like “simple”, “symbol”, “link”, “like”, number, etc. to form a name. As expected, none of the combinations I like is available.

Running out of words, one day I stared at the my cell phone screen, aimlessly browsing site to site. Suddenly I found one thing was in common for all sites — the “three dash” symbol — an icon which represents an entry point of navigation menu, something similar to “Start Menu” in Windows platforms.

Very frankly I did not really pay attention to it before, and I knew this symbol had been used for long time. Because of the popularity of mobile platform with limited screen size, this symbol came in handy that it gave clear indication in web site navigation.

Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_bar) has the explanation of this symbol, but it still misses a piece of info. This triple bar is very similar to Chinese character “三”, which means “three” (no surprise).

Go back to the most important part — domain name. Surprisingly, no one want the domain name symbolthree.com except me.

Okay, so here you go. ≡
